Washington
DC, officially District of Columbia, and simply known as DC is the
capital of the United States of America. Located besides the Potomac
River and surrounded by the states of Virginia (Est) and Maryland
(North, South and West)
This
city joins the main administrative buildings of the country, as well
as the headquarters of: The World Bank, International Monetary Fund,
Organization of American States and Inter American Development Bank ...
Its
main touristic atractions are located in the National Mall, but
it is absolutely worthy if you have time, walking through its wide
streets of North American colonial style and peaceful neighbourhoods.
DC
was born as a planified city and developed in the late eighteenth
century to be used as the permanent national capital. It was named
after George Washingon, first president of the USA. However, the name
Columbia, it is the poetic name of the US in honor to Christopher
Colombus.
It
is an strictly administrative city, with really wide avenues and huge
distances from one place to another. Wear a confortable pair of shoes
and be ready to enjoy WASHINGTON DC...
2 DAYS TOUR IN DC
DAY 1
![]() |
1. White House
A must-do, for sure!!! It is by looking at it in person when you realize that you really are in the capital of the United States. Despite the security distance that you must keep, you can perfectly appreciate it. It will make you remember so many movies ...
2. National Museum of American History
This
museum offers a very interesting way of understanding the history of
the United States by images. If you are a fan of history, go
inside... if you do not have so much time and you prefer sightseeing,
leave it for another occassion and enjoy the rest of the city.
3. Washington Memorial
It's
awesome!!! You are not aware of how big it is until you are in front
of it. Keep in mind that in 1884 it became the highest building in
the world until the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889. It has a height
of 170 meters and the accessed to the top it is allowed. From there
you will enjoy an extraordinary views of the city. This place it's
'Mecca' of every American.
The
Smithsonian Institution is a research and educational center that
furthermore counts on a museum complex. Beside you can find one of
them, the famous National Air and Space Museum. It's super
interesting to visit, since it hosts several of those legendary
aircrafts that passed into history. In addition, there are replicas
and original space stations as well as Apollo 11. Very interesting to
dedicate it approximately 2 hours.
5. United States Capitol
Tremendous!!
You may think you are getting close to it, but the reality is that
there is still missing a long way to reach it. We have seen it in so
many movies that on one hand we are not surprised but on the other it
stuns us a lot!! It is recommended visiting the interior.
6. Supreme Court of the United States
It
is the head of the judicial Power of the U.S. It is a very nice
building with a classic style. As a curiousity, the marble used in
the facade of the building comes from the State of Vermont, the
exterior walls from the state of Georgia, the interior areas from the
state of Alabama, the main interior lounge from Spain and the 24
columns in the exterior from Italy.
DAY 2
1. Arlington National Cemetery
This
is an interesting walk for lovers of military history or American
history itself. We have seen it in so many movies that it is
impossible non-stopping. Highly recommended approaching to J.F.
Kennedy's tomb and its eternal flame.
2. Statue honoring World War II marines
We
love this monument. Specially, the meaning hidden behind it: the
exaltations of teamwork and wellbeing... really touching, isn't it?
Besides, who has not seen the movie that tells the story of this
monument?
If
you can see by any chance an army training where soldiers juggle with
their rifles ... much better ...
3. Roosevelt Memorial
This
is not only a monument for President Roosevel, but also to
conmemorate the period he represented.
It
is pretty interesting the whole complex set of sculptures,
waterfalls, gardens …
4. Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Each
memorial monument in the United States is accompanied by a huge wall
with all the names of those who died in that war. In this one, we
highlight the emotional sculpture of American soldiers, in which are
represented the main ethnic groups who participated beside USA in the
Vietnam War: African American, Hispanic and Caucasian.
5. Lincoln Memorial
The
stunning Greek Doric building hosts one of the most striking
sculptures of the memorial complex in Washington DC.
You
will be transported to another world and all those snapshots recorded
on your retinas will come back to your memory. It is carefully
guarded by African Americans, who have a special appreciation and
gratitude for this American president who returned them their
deserved freedom.
6. Korean War Veterans Memorial
Very
cool!!! It totally looks like a group of soldiers inspecting a
section during the war.
7. Jefferson Memorial
Its
views from the artificial lake, created specifically for this
monument, are amazing. It is one of the most beautiful from the
memorial complex. Within, as in the case of Lincoln Memorial, there
is a sculpture of Jefferson.
Besides
these places, there some other interesting spots not included in this
tour because we wanted to focus on the most important ones. However,
they can also be pretty curious, beautiful and worthy like The
memorial to the National World War II Memorial, several museum
buildings such as American history, national history of American
Indians, the National Archives building, etc.
As
a final curiosity, remembering the Masonic interest raised in the
city after the book "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown, which
is a combination of history, pseudo-religion, power struggles,
sinister political and codes to decipher . Anyway, for those who love
Masons history the city has attracted since always a curious
interest. If you take a look at the following map, you will see that
the layout of its streets form a perfectly drawn star.
DC METRO
To
be able to move over long distances, we recommend to keep an eye in
the Metro stations nearby. Check this metro map of Washington DC,
which surely will be very useful.
